Professor do Department of Science and Technology Studies & Anthropology do Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Foi diretor do Program in Science, Technology and Society do MIT e atualmente ocupa a posição de Andrew W. Professorship in the Humanities no MIT. Michael Fischer é antropólogo e possui PhD e MA obtidos na University of Chicago. Realizou trabalhos de pesquisa de campo em diversas regiões como Irã, Indonésia, Turquia, Israel, Palestina, Índia, Polônia, Armênia, Marrocos, Egito, Afeganistão, Guiana, Suriname, Trinidad e Jamaica. Recebeu diversos prêmios e distinções como o American Ethnological Society Senior Book Prize por seu livro Emergent Forms of Life & the Anthropological Voice (2005), e o Roy D. Albert Prize for M.A. Thesis, University of Chicago (1969), além de ser Senior Fellow da Smithsonian Institution, entre outros. Publicou livros como Mute Dreams, Blind Owls, and Dispersed Knowledges: Persian Poesis in the Transnational Circuitry (2004), Emergent Forms of Life and the Anthropological Voice (2003), Anthropology as Cultural Critique: An Experimental Moment in the Human Sciences (1986), Iran: From Religious Dispute to Revolution (1980), além de vários artigos em livros e revistas especializadas.
