General Information

UFMG’s Graduate Program in Social Communication began in 1995, initially offering the master’s degree. The Doctorate course was integrated to the Program in 2003.

 

Scope

The PPGCOM’s focuses on “Communication and Contemporary Sociability”, emphasizing the interest in the relational dimension of communication, giving attention to its material, symbolic, and social components, from an interactional perspective. It presents three lines of research: Communicative Processes and Social Practices; Image Pragmatics; Mediatic Textualities.

The Program qualifies teachers and researchers to work at higher education institutions.

The PPGCOM’s internationalization process relies on the establishment of partnerships and exchange lines, putting effort into building networks of researchers around common concerns and interests, articulating research and training. International cooperation has resulted in concrete products involving teachers and students: international events in Brazil and abroad; Publication of books, chapters, and articles in foreign periodicals; Short courses, in addition to the usual and growing practice of the teacher-student exchange.

In terms of Social Inclusion, the program maintains a long tradition of articulating research activities with extension actions, through a variety of programs and projects, which receive intense student participation and contribute both to a greater expansion of the PPGCOM’s impact and articulation with other areas of knowledge and with the University’s internal and external audiences.

The Program’s strong suit involves developing interfaces between research and extension, which impacts on the social insertion and visibility of our production. These extension actions are a two-way street, as the research developed by PPGCOM and the various sectors of social life benefit one another.

 

Goals

General goal: To stimulate the investigation of the relational dimension of communication, its interlocution processes and interfaces with social life, giving special emphasis to the interactive dimension of communication, through its material, symbolic, and social components.

Specific goals

a) To consider the global character of the communicative process, stimulating researches, which problematize the interfaces between socio-technical and aesthetic means of the communication devices, products, and interaction processes.

b) To investigate the communicative processes per the experience of the individual and that of the collective, in the formation of social relations and the configuration of contemporary social life.

c) To emphasize the conditions for the production and interpretation of symbolic media forms, the establishment of communication networks and circuits, as well as the socio-historical and cultural rootedness of meaning-negotiation practices among social subjects.

d) To explore the meanings produced from interfaces among techniques, users, and enunciative resources of different media, characterizing media devices, the constitution of audiovisual and multimedia products, as well as intersemiotic processes.

e) To deepen professional and academic knowledge, and enable the development of Social Communication-specific research skills.

 

Lines of research

Communicative Processes and Social Practices: from the reflexivity perspective, it investigates communicative processes that shape social relations, particularly in cultural and political contexts. This perspective encourages the investigation of the socio-historical context of these practices, the constitution of sociabilities as well as the power dynamics. The projects within this research line are designed to analyze the interactive forms, the interlocutions, the actions of the subjects, the uses and appropriations of different media, and communication strategies, whether in daily or in public life.

Mediatic Textuality:  media products and devices, and their material, narrative, and discursive specificities, enthralled in their immanent dimension, which establish  particular  types of interaction, as well as in the “knowing”,  that are historically situated.

Image Pragmatics: it addresses creation procedures, expression modes and image fruition forms, considering the specificity of the devices, speeches, and performances they produce, as well as their hybridization. It calls upon a reflection on the imagistic production, prioritizing its documentary, fictional and plastic aspects. Taking into account the pragmatic dimension that is intrinsic and coextensive with the expressive dimension of images, we strive to understand the mediations by which they establish subjective, political and aesthetic experiences.

The three lines of research share points in common throughout the projects and research groups that work in the program: Group and Research in Image and Sociability (GRIS); Research Group in Media and Public Sphere (EME); Poetics of Experience Research Group; Communication Frame Studies Center: Narrative and Experience; Communication and Culture in Televisualities Research Group (COMCULT); Center for Convergence in New Media (CCNM); Research Group in Aesthetics of the Performance and Communication Experiences (NEEPEC); Research Group on Communication, Social Mobilization, and Public Opinion (MOBILIZA); Collective Studies, Ethnographic Research and Communicational Actions in Contexts of Risk (CORISCO).

 

Subjects and their respective descriptions

The PPGCOM is structured in a way so that it offers a group of subjects common for both Master’s and Doctorate levels, another group exclusively for each level, and a set of subjects to serve as a reference for each research line.

The subjects in the first group foster deep and critical knowledge on Communication Theory, as well as other necessary theoretical-methodological contributions to research planning and execution for both Master’s and Doctorate levels.

The second subject group focuses on particular issues within each graduate level, fostering a theoretical-methodological program related to its focus area.

 

Selection Process

Admission to Master’s degree and Doctorate in Social Communication is open to graduate students only. Candidates must present documentation, a study plan situating theoretical basis and the scope of the object of study, outlining the research proposal to be developed in one of the Program’s research lines. The process also entails  an interview about the candidate’s resumé and study plan, a written exam on foreign languages, another written exam on topics of Communication Studies (for the master’s degree). 20 seats for the Master’s degree and 15 to the Doctorate are offered annually.
