WELCOME

The Postgraduate Program in Psychology of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (PPG-PSI/UFMG) started in 1989, with the creation of a Master’s Degree in Psychology, major in Social Psychology. Eight years later, in 1997, the major in Psychoanalytic Studies was created, while the major in Developmental Psychology started in 2002. In 2007, the PPG-PSI undertook a curricular reform of its Master’s programme (effective in 2008) and presented to CAPES the proposal for the creation of a Doctoral programme. The PhD in Psychology started in 2008 and the first PhD theses’ defences occurred in 2012. Thus, the PPG-PSI is among the oldest programs in Psychology at CAPES. To date, over than 600 dissertations and 60 PhD theses have been publicly defended within the PPG-PSI, which constitutes a good indicator of the social and academic relevance of the PPG-PSI’s Programme in Psychology.

ABOUT US

The Postgraduate Program in Psychology of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (PPG-PSI/UFMG) comprises Master and Doctoral programmes in Psychology, aiming at training qualified lecturers and researchers to conduct research and teaching activities in Psychology. These competencies are developed within the Master’s programme, while the PhD programme seeks additionally to build capacities relating to the production of original and independent scientific knowledge in Psychology.

The PPG-PSI is currently committed to consolidate the actions aiming at enhancing its academic excellence. Among these actions, the ones in favour of the establishment of national and international exchanges are fundamental, consolidating the process of internationalization of the programme and in line with national scientific policies and guidance. Primordial actions to increase the visibility of the program include the periodic assessment of the Programme’s social insertion and scientific (individual and collective) production based on the academic indicators adopted by the area. We encourage the development of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula and research, aiming at arousing student’s interest in continuing the training programme, through the enrolment in the postgraduate programme and alumni’s professional insertion as lecturers and researchers.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Postgraduate Programme in Psychology is the following:

• Training highly qualified researchers and lecturers;
• Developing research activities aimed at understanding and solving psychological and social issues. Multidisciplinary research activities are highly encouraged;
• Promoting the synergies between the scientific knowledge production and its application to the needs of the population;
• Developing centres of excellence in research and/or intervention, partnering with national and international research institutions.

RESEARCH AREAS

The PPG-PSI organizes its academic actions (development of research and capacity-building projects, activities of teaching and supervision) focusing on three majors and six lines of research, as follows:

1) Major in Developmental Psychology (in extinction as of 2017)

Two lines of research

1.1) Cognition and Language

Study of human development and related conditions, with emphasis on cognitive development and language throughout the life cycle.

1.2) Development and Individual Differences

Study of individual differences in the development of intelligence and personality. Evaluation, prevention and intervention in developmental disorders. Development and use of psychological assessment instruments.

2) Major in Psychoanalytic Studies

One line of research

2.1) Fundamental Concepts in Psychoanalysis and Research in the Clinical domain and Culture

Study of the genesis and history of psychoanalytic concepts, considering the dissidences and ramifications of the psychoanalytic movement and investigations on the use of the psychoanalytic method in diverse institutional and cultural conditions.

3) Major in Social Psychology

Three lines of research

3.1) Culture, Modernity and Subjectification Processes

Study on contemporary modes of subjectification, relations between individuals and cultural and institutional processes, social memory, sociocultural diversity and identity, sociocultural processes and practices with an emphasis on gender, ethnicity and mental health, social networks and their effects on modes of subjectification and construction of identities.

3.2) Politics, Social Participation and Identification Processes

Study of the relations between individuals and politics in the processes of social transformation, in social movements, in public policies and in the processes of construction of individual and collective identities. Study of types and psychosocial characteristics of political phenomena such as social change, social and community participation, oppressive relations, social awareness and political identity. The understanding of politics in relation to emotions, identities and forms of participation in the contemporary society.

3.3) Work, Sociability and Health

Study of the relationship between work and daily life and the resulting sociability. Psychosocial analysis of the work, with emphasis on its impact, including transformations in the labour world, on workers’ health.

FACULTY

The PPG-PSI is hosted by the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences (FAFICH), a unit of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), a well-recognized university in Brazil. It currently comprises seven departments (Anthropology, Political Science, Communication, Philosophy, History, Psychology and Sociology) and eight postgraduate programmes. This large thematic coverage generates a dynamic environment, providing students with a varied offer of complementary courses and events.

UFMG

The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is based in Belo Horizonte at the main campus of Pampulha, where the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences (FAFICH), and the PPG-PSI, are located. The campus benefits from a large natural area with several faculties, living spaces, basic services for employees and students (such as bookstores, stationery stores, restaurants, cafeterias, etc.) and an ecological reserve.

The campus of Pampulha is in a traditional region of the city, well-connected by public transport services and benefiting from social apparatuses. University residences are located in the surrounding neighbourhoods, as well as alternative private housing. The region of Pampulha is known for its touristic potential, and includes a Modern Ensemble declared world heritage of humanity.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

The PPG-PSI and its units follow the academic calendar adopted by Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Academic activities are organized by semester. Courses take place from March to mid-July and from August to mid-December. The selection process usually extends from June to November, details are yearly provided in this website.

ADMISSION

a)      Selection

Two different public notices are published every year, one for the Master’s programme and the other for the PhD programme. The selection is then divided in distinct steps: homologation of the subscription, pre-project evaluation, verification of language certificates (English at Master’s degree level, and a second language, French or Spanish, in addition to English, at PhD level), individual interview and academic records. Foreign candidates are required to pass a fluency test in Portuguese language. Candidates are not required to travel to Belo Horizonte during the distinct steps of the selection process. Distance and online alternatives are thereby foreseen.

b)     Enrolments

The candidate approved in every distinct step of the selection process may proceed with the enrolment. Enrolment is divided in two steps: pre-registration and enrolment in chosen disciplines and academic activities. The enrolment process runs from November to February, and may be completed from distance.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE

The PPG-PSI is directed by a collegiate composed by eight faculty member representatives and two student representatives (one from the Master’s programme and one from the PhD programme). Two faculty member representatives respectively assume the role of coordinator and vice-coordinator of the PPG-PSI.

In addition to the academic infrastructure, the collegiate benefits from a secretariat dedicated to assist students and lecturers, in view of ensuring the roll out of administrative activities.
