Field Trip - Ouro Preto (31 May, 2008 - Saturday)

Field trip limited to 100 participants (by order of inscription. We will prioritize the presenters of panels or individual papers).

Subject

Mining and food supply in Minas Gerais history - Ouro Preto, a colonial Luso-Brazilian city

The field trip will focus on the conquest of the central region of Minas Gerais by people involved in mining activities (gold mining, since the end of the 17th Century, and iron mining, since the 19th century). We will visit the Itabira Peak - nowadays called Itabirito Peak - the most important landmark for travellers throughout the centuries. The roads around the peak were very important for both trade and supply of the several villages and cities founded in that mining area. Nowadays, this area is part of an ecological reserve, preserved as an historical and ecological patrimony: the Itacolomi State Park.
After Itabirito Peak, we will visit the city of Ouro Preto (formerly Vila Rica, capital of Minas Gerais until 1897), an example of a Colonial Luso-Brazilian city. We will discuss aspects of the history of the mining areas and their food supply.
