History, Culture and Philosophy: Horizons to a better comprehension of Psychology

This Memorandum number proposes debates about historic and epistemological themes in Psychology and similar areas and presents the articulation of these debates with the cultural context.

In regard to the recent History of Psychology, it refers to an important aspect which is the Psychology institutionalization in the Catholics Universities in Argentina
through the creation of an specific cathedra, in the article  The creation of psychology undergraduate program at argentinian catholic universities of María Andrea Piñeda.

The article Cesare Lombroso: misoneism and the martyrdoom of madman of Stefano Bertani illustrates connection between the theory of madness and the evil doctrine in a time marked by the trustiness in the progress, positivism and spiritualism, interpretating  the work of the Italian psychiatrist as a significant expression of the modernity ideology. Still, to the comprehension of the anthropological vision of Modern culture, but in its indications, lies the contribution of Crisis and metamorphosis of Christianity in Europe between 16th and 17th century by the historian Danilo Zardin, marking the important changes that occurred in the dawn of the Modern Age in the plan of the history of mentality and the cultural and religious history.

The fact that the period of the culture history called Modern Age (or Barroco in Brazil’s case) provided peculiar modalities to the elaboration of personal and social experience in Brazilian traditional communities that still remain today, is presented in the article Music, sensitive body and social body in Brazilian barroco of Mahfoud and Massimi, through a comparative research that connects the phenomenological and the historical aspects.

Donati’s article The masculine and feminine identity: distintions and relations to a society in the measures of the human person discuss the relations between culture, society and personal experience, analysing the difficulties of present occidental society to elaborate a culture capable to harvest and enrich the sexual difference without losing the humane that is inside it, and proposing, in this way, a relational approach.

In the interface between Historiography and Epistemology lies the article Articulations between History and Epistemology of Psychoanalysis: a case study of Raul Albino Pacheco Filho, that has, as its basis, the classical work of Thomas Kuhn, and discuss the relations between science history and science philosophy in the specific fields of history and epistemology psychoanalysis and psychology as it appears in the work of Jean Laplanche.

The importance of the interaction between philosophy and psychology is presented in the contribution Humanistic Psychology: a history of an epistemological dilemma of Castañon, that analyses the relations between object and method in the construction of humanism approach, being the definition of the object led by a human being definition that considers it as a being of reason and freedom.

Still discussing about the relations between human definition and psychology, places the article Social dimension in the subject’s development on psychology of Ruth Bernardes de Sant’Ana, that analyses the subject constitution in psychology based in the social interaction theory by George Herbert Mead and L. S. Vigotsky (1896-1934).

Eventually, the article of Loureiro e Baptista History of psychology as a masters degree discipline: report of an experience points to the importance of including the area of historic studies in the post-graduation curriculum with the intention of constituting the researcher and the professor in psychology in a wide cultural horizon.

In short, it’s not possible to consider appropriate the psychology and the social and personal experience, which is its object, without considering the deep relations that it has with the culture in its different shapes: from de popular culture to the fields of philosophy of knowing, ethic, human beings and society visions. The researches here proposed show that these relations are possible and relevant if they’re weaved by a clear and rigorous methodological trajectory.
