Presentation

Latin-American Historical Archaeology has been established as a field of study in the last few decades. Although there is a diverse range of interests among its scholars, there are some specific issues that have attracted special attention such as the theoretical production and the formulation and development of alternative approaches to the ones produced in the centers of power.

Unfortunately, despite the growth and variety of research being carried out, the Latin-American historical archaeology has been lacking more vehicles of interchange for scholars from different countries. Therefore, it has been restricted to the frontiers of their own country. These artificial barriers have made difficult the search for commonalities that would allow the consolidation of a Latin-American historical archaeology.

It is possible that the establishment of connections between the archaeologies of different countries has become one of the biggest challenges that we should face at the contemporary setting. The existence of pluralistic spaces of discussion is essential to approach issues such as the genesis of the modern society in Latin America, or the historical connnections that can reconstruct - through the study of material culture - the contexts in which occurred the social practices of the region.

In proposing a journal of Latin-American historical archaeology we intend to create this space of interchange and interaction among scholars of this discipline. The Journal will be implemented with solid criterium of excellence – through peer reviews – and it will approach issues of method and theory, and case studies in Latin American historical archaeology.

The idea is to publish 02 (two) annual issues through the Laboratório de Arqueologia da Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Archaeological Lab of the College of Philosophy and Human Sciences of the Federal University of Minas Gerais).
